Here we are, not long away from meeting our baby boy and with that starting another breastfeeding journey. I nursed my first born for 18 months and we most definitely had our highs and lows. We got off to a rocky start as she had a lip and tongue tie – which we didn’t get corrected until she was three months old (you can read about our experience here) so you can imagine those first few months were excruciating, stressful and full of so many tears from the both of us. If I have learned one thing it is to check and have baby checked right away for ties and get them corrected as soon as possible. I want to be sure we are set up for success and latch is extremely important.
I am currently 36 weeks pregnant and I have everything organized and prepared for our breastfeeding journey to begin. My nightstand is stocked with nursing pads, nipple cream, burp cloths and a few snacks to have for late night munchies. I also always have a large tumbler of water beside my bed because nursing makes you THIRSTY! We have a boppy pillow upstairs and downstairs – I found I was always trying to find where it was located when it was time to nurse in the early days. My personal preference is to use a boppy while breastfeeding when they’re tiny. I also have all of my nursing bras and nursing tank tops organized together in one drawer for easy access.
It is helpful to feel prepared for whatever your breastfeeding journey may entail. I am thrilled to have found Fourth Trimester Mama, a Mom owned company that delivers postpartum and breastfeeding essentials straight to your doorstep all in one perfectly packaged bundle. I am excited to have these breastfeeding products that many mom’s feel are must haves (that are totally new to me this time around!) at my fingertips. I have the same goals that I had with Juliette – I hope to nurse for at least one year and then after that we will see how things go. I plan on pumping after a few weeks when my supply has time to establish because I do have some appointments where I have to leave Dawson with my husband for a few hours and I would like a small stash of pumped milk for those situations.
Breastfeeding is hard – I expect it to be even as a second time mom who breastfed for 18 months before. I am sure every experience is unique because every baby is unique. I plan on giving myself grace and time to learn all over again with Dawson. Don’t be afraid to seek help, support and resources.
What are YOUR nursing essentials? I would love to hear!
